Antihistamines

My day was good. To night, i had a nice chat time with my old fren at CyberJaya.

Today i would like to share about Antihistamines and my short note....

What is Histamines? 

Its a natural reaction's body produces chemical in immune system which is protect  body from foreign object ( against illness and infection). So, antihistamines work by blocking the receptor thats effected to reduces inflamation.

Antihistamines work to relief runny nose,allergic ( etc: skin, conjunctivitis,food allergies,rhinitis)

Antihistamines drug are classified in three group:

1) 1st generation : Chlorphenamine & Diphenhydramine
2) 2nd and 3rd generation :Loratadine, Cetirizine
3) H2 receptor antagonist : used to treat stomach ulcers

Side effect

1) 1st generation : Drowsiness, impaired thinking, dry mouth, dizziness, constipation, blurred vission.
2) 2nd and 3rd generation :headache, dry mouth,dry nose
3) H2 receptor antagonist : diarrhoea, headahe,dizziness

Common antihistamines dosing practice in hospital :

Montelukast

> 6 months until 6 years old        : 4 mg ON ( 1 Sachet)
6 years until 15 years                   : 5mg ON  (1 Tablet)

Cetirizine

1 years until 2 years                    : 2.5mg BD
2 years  until 6 years                   : 5mg OD
6 years until Adults                     : 10mg OD

Loratadine

2 years until 6 years                    : 5mg OD
6 years until Adult                      : 10mg OD

Chlorphenamine

2 years to 6 years                        : 1mg TDS (max 6mg/day)
                                                    : 0.1mg/kg TDS (syrup)
6 years untul Adult                     : 2mg TDS (max 12mg/day)

Promethazine

2 years to 5 years                           : 5mg BD
             Antihistamine/ antiemetic: 0.2mg/kg TDS (syrup)
             Sedative                            : 0.5mg/kg TDS (syrup)
5years until 10 years                      : 5mg to 10mg BD
> 10 years                                      : 10mg to 20mg BD/TDS


Diphenhydramine (syrup)

2 years until 12 years                      : 1mg/kg TDS (usually 5ml TDS)
> 13 years until Adult                     : 10ml - 15ml TDS

1) Caution : Kids under 2 years old is contraindicate (CANNOT GIVE) anthistamines!
